# **Product Specification: AISI 1020 Steel, Hot Rolled, Quenched & Tempered, Round Bar (19-32 mm / 0.75-1.25 in)**
---
## **1. Product Overview**
This product is a **heat-treated variant** of standard AISI 1020 low-carbon steel, engineered to achieve significantly enhanced mechanical properties. Starting as a hot-rolled round bar in the 19-32 mm diameter range, it undergoes a precise **quenching and tempering (Q&T) heat treatment** process. This treatment transforms the steel's microstructure, resulting in a superior balance of **high strength and good toughness** compared to its as-rolled or normalized condition. It is specified for applications requiring greater load-bearing capacity, wear resistance, and durability than standard mild steel can provide.
## **2. Key Features & Manufacturing Process**
* **Enhanced Strength:** The Q&T process dramatically increases tensile and yield strength, typically doubling or more the strength of hot-rolled 1020.
* **Improved Toughness:** Tempering following quenching restores ductility and impact resistance, preventing brittleness and creating a reliable, durable material.
* **Consistent Microstructure:** The heat treatment produces a uniform **tempered martensite** structure throughout the cross-section (within the hardenability limits of the grade), ensuring predictable performance.
* **Good Machinability (Post-Treatment):** In its final tempered condition, it offers reasonably good machinability, superior to many alloy steels of equivalent strength.
* **Process:** The hot-rolled bar is **austenitized** (heated to ~870-925°C / 1600-1700°F), rapidly **quenched** in oil or water to form martensite, and then **tempered** at an intermediate temperature (typically 425-650°C / 800-1200°F) to achieve the desired strength-ductility combination.
## **3. Standard Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
| Element | AISI 1020 Specification | Typical Analysis |
| :--------------- | :---------------------- | :--------------- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.18 - 0.23 | 0.20 |
| **Manganese (Mn)**| 0.30 - 0.60 | 0.45 |
| **Phosphorus (P)**| ≤ 0.040 | 0.010 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 | 0.025 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Balance |
*Note: The relatively low carbon and alloy content limits the maximum achievable hardness and the depth of full hardening (hardenability) compared to medium-carbon or alloy steels.*
## **4. Typical Mechanical Properties (Quenched & Tempered Condition)**
*Properties are representative for the specified diameter range after Q&T treatment. Exact values depend on tempering temperature.*

## **5. Primary Applications**
This heat-treated bar is specified for mechanically critical components that require more performance than standard mild steel:
* **High-Strength Shafts & Axles:** For agricultural machinery, conveyors, and industrial gearboxes operating under moderate torsional and bending stresses.
* **Pins, Bolts, and Studs:** Where a higher grade of fasteners or connectors is needed (e.g., **ASTM A449** specification for quenched and tempered steel bolts).
* **Gears and Sprockets:** Lightly to moderately loaded transmission components, often after subsequent machining and case hardening.
* **Hydraulic Cylinder Rods & Piston Rods:** For medium-duty applications requiring good strength and fatigue resistance.
* **Linkage Components & Lever Arms:** In construction, material handling, and automotive suspension systems.
* **Machine Components:** Ejector pins, guide rods, and other parts subject to wear and cyclic loading.
## **6. Conforming International Standards**
This product meets the intent or specific requirements of several standards for quenched and tempered carbon steel bars:
* **AISI (USA):** AISI 1020 (Base Grade)
* **ASTM (USA):** **ASTM A322** (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Alloy, Standard Grades - Grade 1020), **ASTM A29** (General Requirements for Steel Bars)
* **SAE (USA):** SAE J403, SAE J412 (Chemical), SAE J1268 (Hardenability Bands)
* **UNS (USA):** UNS G10200
* **ISO (International):** ISO 683-18 (Heat-treatable non-alloy steels - may be supplied to specific property classes after agreement).
* **DIN (Germany):** 1.0402 / C22 (Can be supplied in heat-treated condition per EN 10083-2).
## **7. Fabrication & Processing Notes**
* **Machining:** Should be machined in the final tempered condition. Use rigid setups, sharp carbide tooling, and moderate speeds/feeds. Annealing is not recommended post-heat treatment.
* **Welding:** **Not generally recommended after final heat treatment.** Welding can destroy the tempered martensite structure in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), creating a brittle, untempered martensite area and a soft, overtempered zone. If welding is unavoidable, preheating (~150-200°C / 300-400°F) and strict post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) procedures are mandatory.
* **Further Heat Treatment:** Can undergo **case hardening** (carburizing) to create an extremely hard, wear-resistant surface over the tough, strong Q&T core—a common combination for gears and bearings.
* **Straightening:** May require hot straightening if necessary after heat treatment.
## **8. Availability & Identification**
* **Form:** Straight length, round bars.
* **Diameter Range:** **19 mm to 32 mm (0.75 inches to 1.25 inches).**
* **Condition:** Hot Rolled, Quenched and Tempered (HR Q&T).
* **Surface:** Typically free of heavy mill scale, may have a tempered oxide (temper) color or be shot blasted.
* **Marking:** Often marked with the grade and a symbol (e.g., "QT") to indicate heat-treated condition.
---
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is for reference purposes. The achievable properties in the Q&T condition are highly dependent on the specific quenching medium, tempering parameters, and the bar's diameter (due to hardenability limits). For the 19-32mm range, through-hardening is typically achievable with vigorous quenching. Users must obtain certified test reports (MTRs) for critical applications and are responsible for validating the material's suitability for their specific design and service conditions. Welding of Q&T steel requires expert metallurgical guidance.
