AISI 1042 Steel, Cold Drawn Bar (UNS G10420) Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Datasheet: AISI 1042 Cold Drawn Steel Bar (UNS G10420)** --- #### **1. Product Overview** AISI 1042 Cold Drawn Bar (UNS G10420) is a medium-carbon steel product manufactured through a cold drawing process that significantly enhances its mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, and surface quality. This process involves pulling hot-rolled stock through a carbide die at room temperature, resulting in strain hardening and superior geometric characteristics. With its balanced carbon-manganese composition, AISI 1042 offers an optimal combination of strength, hardenability, and machinability, making it suitable for precision components requiring reliable performance in demanding applications. --- #### **2. Key Characteristics & Advantages** * **Enhanced Mechanical Properties:** Cold working increases yield and tensile strength substantially over hot-rolled material. * **Superior Dimensional Accuracy:** Maintains tight diameter and straightness tolerances, suitable for precision applications without secondary machining. * **Excellent Surface Finish:** Produces a smooth, bright, and scale-free surface (typically 1.6-3.2 µm Ra), ideal for bearing surfaces and aesthetic parts. * **Good Hardenability:** Responds well to quenching and tempering for additional strength enhancement. * **Improved Machinability:** The cold worked structure often provides more consistent and predictable chip formation compared to hot-rolled stock. * **Cost-Effective for Precision Parts:** Reduces or eliminates need for additional turning, grinding, or polishing operations. --- #### **3. Chemical Composition** | Element | Composition (% by weight) | Standard Reference | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.40 - 0.47 | ASTM A108 / SAE J403 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 - 0.90 | ASTM A108 / SAE J403 | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 | ASTM A108 / SAE J403 | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 | ASTM A108 / SAE J403 | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | ASTM A108 / SAE J403 | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | - | *Note: Some standards may allow Manganese up to 1.00%. Sulfur content is typically kept low for better ductility and weldability.* --- #### **4. Typical Mechanical Properties (Cold Drawn Condition)** *Properties are for material in the cold drawn, stress-relieved condition and can vary with section size.* | Property | Typical Value / Range | Test Standard | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Tensile Strength** | 620 - 760 MPa (90 - 110 ksi) | ASTM A370 | | **Yield Strength (0.2% offset)** | 515 - 655 MPa (75 - 95 ksi) | ASTM A370 | | **Elongation in 50 mm (2")** | 12% - 18% | ASTM A370 | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% - 50% | ASTM A370 | | **Brinell Hardness** | 187 - 241 HB | ASTM E10 | | **Surface Roughness (Ra)** | 1.6 - 3.2 µm (63 - 125 µin) | ASME B46.1 | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 200 GPa (29 x 10⁶ psi) | ASTM E111 | | **Machinability Rating** | ~55% (vs. 100% for 1212 Steel) | - | --- #### **5. Primary Applications** Cold drawn AISI 1042 bars are specified for precision components requiring good strength, dimensional accuracy, and a quality surface finish. * **Shafts & Axles:** For automotive, agricultural, and general machinery (e.g., pump shafts, motor shafts, conveyor rolls). * **Gears & Sprockets:** Often used as blank stock for machined gears that will be heat-treated. * **Fasteners:** High-strength bolts, studs, and pins (approaching Grade 8.8 / SAE Grade 5 properties). * **Hydraulic & Pneumatic Components:** Cylinder rods, piston rods, and valve stems. * **Tooling & Fixtures:** Jigs, fixtures, dowel pins, and guide rods. * **Automotive Components:** Steering parts, suspension components, and transmission shafts. --- #### **7. Heat Treatment Response** While often used in the cold drawn condition, AISI 1042 responds well to heat treatment for enhanced properties: * **Annealing:** Heat to ~790-815°C (1450-1500°F), slow cool. Used to soften for machining or to relieve cold work stresses. * **Normalizing:** Heat to ~870-925°C (1600-1700°F), air cool. Refines grain structure. * **Quenching & Tempering:** For high strength and toughness. * **Austenitizing:** ~830-855°C (1525-1575°F) * **Quenchant:** Oil (standard) or water (for simple shapes, with higher cracking risk). * **Tempering:** 425-650°C (800-1200°F) to achieve desired hardness (typically 25-40 HRC). * **Surface Hardening:** Suitable for induction or flame hardening to create a wear-resistant case. --- #### **8. Fabrication & Processing Notes** * **Machining:** Good machinability. Use positive rake tools and adequate coolant. The material is often supplied in a stress-relieved condition to minimize distortion during machining. * **Welding:** **Fair.** Pre-heating (150-260°C / 300-500°F) and post-weld heat treatment are **strongly recommended** due to the carbon content and cold worked structure. Use low-hydrogen electrodes. * **Forming:** Cold forming is possible but limited. The material is harder and less ductile than hot-rolled stock. Annealing may be necessary for significant bending or forming. * **Grinding & Finishing:** The smooth as-drawn surface is ideal for further polishing or plating. Grinding may be used for ultra-precise dimensions. --- #### **9. Quality & Inspection** * Material is supplied to **ASTM A108**, which covers cold-finished carbon and alloy steel bars. * Available with a **Mill Test Report (MTR)** certifying chemistry and mechanical properties. * Dimensional tolerances are significantly tighter than for hot-rolled bars (per ASTM A108 tables). * Surface is free of scale, bright, and suitable for many applications without additional finishing. --- **Disclaimer:** This information is for reference purposes. Properties can vary with manufacturer, exact processing, and heat treatment. For critical applications, always consult the material certification, relevant standards (ASTM A108), and conduct application-specific testing. Cold drawn bars exhibit directional properties (anisotropy) which should be considered in design. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1042 Steel, Cold Drawn Bar (UNS G10420) Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4803 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1042 Steel, Cold Drawn Bar (UNS G10420) Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
