### **Product Data Sheet: AISI 1074 Steel, Hot-Rolled (DISCONTINUED)**
#### **1. Overview & Discontinuation Status**
**Product Status: Commercially Discontinued / Legacy Grade**
AISI 1074 was a standard high-carbon, non-alloy steel supplied in the common hot-rolled condition (typically as rounds, flats, or bars). As a hot-rolled product, it featured a characteristic mill-scaled surface and a pearlitic microstructure, providing a good balance of as-supplied strength, machinability, and low cost. This made it a versatile raw material for components destined for subsequent forging, machining, and—most critically—final heat treatment (quenching and tempering) to achieve high hardness and wear resistance.
**Reason for Discontinuation:** The primary driver for the obsolescence of AISI 1074 was **industry standardization and material rationalization**. Its chemical composition and mechanical properties fell almost entirely within the overlapping ranges of the more widely produced and specified adjacent grades:
* **AISI 1070** (0.65-0.75% C)
* **AISI 1078/1080** (0.72-0.85% C / 0.75-0.88% C)
Mills, standards organizations (like SAE and ASTM), and end-users consolidated their specifications to reduce inventory complexity, streamline production, and simplify design engineering. Consequently, **AISI 1070 and AISI 1078/1080 have become the direct and fully qualified replacements** for all former AISI 1074 applications.

#### **2. Historical Chemical Composition (per AISI/SAE)**
The composition was central to its classification as a high-carbon steel.
| Element | Content (%) (Typical for AISI 1074) |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | **0.70 - 0.80** |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 - 0.90 |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance |
**Note:** This carbon range sits precisely between, and overlaps with, AISI 1070 and AISI 1078.
---
#### **3. Typical Historical Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Hot Rolled)**
Properties were measured in the black, as-rolled state.
| Property | Typical Value / Description |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Condition** | Hot-Rolled (with mill scale) |
| **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) |
| **Tensile Strength** | ~ 640 - 760 MPa (93 - 110 ksi) |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | ~ 360 - 430 MPa (52 - 62 ksi) |
| **Elongation (in 50 mm)** | ~ 10 - 14% |
| **Hardness** | **190 - 235 HB** (Brinell) |
| **Machinability** | **Fair (~50-55% of AISI 1212).** Acceptable in the as-rolled state for roughing; often annealed or normalized for better machinability in complex parts. |
| **Weldability** | **Very Poor / Not Recommended.** The high carbon content makes it extremely prone to cracking in the heat-affected zone. |
---
#### **4. Key Characteristics & Metallurgical Behavior**
* **High Hardenability Potential:** Like all steels in this carbon range, AISI 1074 was valued for its ability to be hardened to high levels (up to 60-64 HRC) through quenching and tempering, providing excellent wear resistance.
* **Moderate As-Rolled Properties:** Provided sufficient strength for handling and initial fabrication steps like cutting, straightening, or rough machining.
* **Final Properties Heat-Treatment Dependent:** The as-rolled state was merely a starting point; the final performance was entirely determined by the subsequent thermal processing (austenitizing, quenching, and tempering).
---
#### **5. Historical & Legacy Applications**
In its time, AISI 1074 hot-rolled steel served as general-purpose feedstock for a variety of high-strength components, identical to those now made from AISI 1070 or 1078/1080:
* **Forging Stock:** Used for drop forging or hammer forging into tools (wrenches, pry bars), agricultural implements (plow shares), and automotive components.
* **Springs:** Material for manufacturing high-stress mechanical springs, such as heavy-duty coil springs and leaf springs, after appropriate forming and heat treatment.
* **Cutting Tools & Blades:** Base material for industrial knives, shear blades, and mower blades.
* **Wear Parts & Shafts:** Components like axles, pins, rollers, and chain links that required a hard, wear-resistant surface after case hardening or through-hardening.
* **Hand Tools:** For tools requiring a durable, hardenable steel.

#### **6. Relevant Historical Standards & Modern Replacements**
Procurement for new projects should reference the standards for the replacement grades.

### **Summary and Engineering Guidance**
**AISI 1074 hot-rolled steel is a legacy material no longer actively produced to that specific grade designation.** Its discontinuation is a result of practical industry consolidation, not a performance deficiency.
**For Design, Specification, and Procurement:**
1. **Do Not Specify AISI 1074** on any new drawing, bill of material, or purchase order.
2. **Select a Direct Replacement:**
* **For applications where the historical 1074 was likely used for its upper-mid range carbon content:** Specify **AISI 1078 (UNS G10780)**. This is the most common and direct 1-to-1 functional replacement, offering virtually identical hardenability and final properties.
* **If a slight margin in ductility for forging or a slightly lower as-rolled hardness is desired:** Specify **AISI 1070 (UNS G10700)**. This is also an excellent replacement and may be more readily available in some markets.
3. **For Legacy Equipment or Spare Parts:** If dealing with an old drawing specifying AISI 1074, consult with a qualified steel distributor or metallurgist. They will recommend supplying **AISI 1078** (or occasionally 1070) certified to meet the required chemical and mechanical property ranges. The replacement will perform identically in the finished, heat-treated component.
The transition from AISI 1074 to 1070/1078 represents a successful simplification within the carbon steel industry, ensuring continued availability of high-performance materials without compromise.
