AISI 1080 Steel, as rolled Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Data Sheet: AISI 1080 Steel, As-Rolled Condition** #### **1. Overview** AISI 1080 in the **as-rolled condition** refers to the standard, unprocessed state of this high-carbon steel directly after hot-rolling and air-cooling. This is the most common and economical supply form, characterized by its dark, scaled surface and a microstructure consisting primarily of **pearlite** with possible areas of proeutectoid cementite. The as-rolled state provides a practical foundation of moderate strength and good machinability, serving as the essential raw material from which high-performance components are manufactured. It is selected for its low cost and suitability for subsequent forging, machining, and most critically, **customized heat treatment** to unlock its full potential of extreme hardness and strength. --- #### **2. Chemical Composition (AISI/SAE Standard)** | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | **0.75 - 0.88** | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 - 0.90 | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | **Note:** The high and narrow carbon range is the defining feature, placing AISI 1080 at the upper limit of standard high-carbon steels and ensuring its superior hardenability. --- #### **3. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Rolled)** *Properties are for the material after hot rolling and natural cooling, with no subsequent annealing, normalizing, or thermal treatment.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Condition** | Hot-Rolled & Air-Cooled (Mill Condition) | | **Microstructure** | **Coarse Pearlite + Proeutectoid Cementite (at grain boundaries)** | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 190-210 GPa (27.5-30.5 x 10⁶ psi) | | **Tensile Strength** | **675 - 830 MPa (98 - 120 ksi)** | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | **385 - 495 MPa (56 - 72 ksi)** | | **Elongation (in 50 mm / 2 in)** | **~ 10%** | | **Reduction in Area** | **~ 25%** | | **Hardness** | **201 - 255 HB** (Brinell) | | **Machinability** | **Fair to Poor (~45-50% of AISI 1212).** The pearlitic structure is abrasive to cutting tools. Machinability improves significantly if the material is normalized or annealed. | | **Surface Finish** | Characteristic black oxide mill scale, which must be removed for most finishing operations or welding. | | **Internal Stress** | May contain residual thermal stresses from uneven cooling after rolling. | --- #### **4. Key Characteristics & Metallurgical Behavior** * **Baseline for Transformation:** The as-rolled state is a starting point. Its high carbon content in a pearlitic form provides the necessary chemistry for exceptional response to heat treatment, but offers only a fraction of the steel's potential performance. * **Moderate As-Supplied Strength:** Provides sufficient strength for handling, transportation, and initial fabrication steps like cutting, straightening, or rough machining. * **Limited Ductility:** The pearlitic structure and possible grain boundary cementite make it relatively brittle compared to annealed states. It is not suitable for significant cold forming. * **Scale and Decarburization:** The hot-rolling process results in surface scale and a thin layer of decarburization, which must be accounted for in final machining allowances. * **Very Poor Weldability:** **Not recommended.** The high carbon content, combined with the as-rolled structure and residual stresses, creates a very high risk of cracking in the heat-affected zone. If welding is unavoidable, extensive preheating (400-450°C) and post-weld heat treatment are mandatory. * **Final Properties are Heat-Treatment Dependent:** The true value of AISI 1080—high hardness (60-65 HRC), wear resistance, and spring properties—is achieved only through subsequent quenching and tempering. --- #### **5. Primary Product Applications (As a Raw Material)** As-rolled AISI 1080 is used as feedstock for manufacturing components that will undergo further processing. * **Forging Stock:** The primary application. Used as billets or bars for **hot forging** into tools (hammers, wrenches), agricultural implements (plow shares), and automotive components. * **Machined Parts:** For components that will be **machined and then heat-treated**, such as non-precision shafts, rollers, and heavy-duty pins. * **Spring Material:** Purchased as-rolled for subsequent **hot forming or coiling of springs** (e.g., leaf springs), followed by hardening and tempering. * **Tool & Die Blanks:** Starting material for making tooling that will be fully heat-treated after machining. * **Wear Parts Blanks:** For parts like grader blades or liners that are cut to size and then hardened. --- #### **6. Relevant International & Industry Standards** As-rolled product is typically supplied to general material standards. | Standard System | Standard Designation | Title / Scope | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **AISI / SAE / UNS (USA)** | **1080, SAE J403, UNS G10800** | Standard Grade Designation | | **ASTM (USA)** | **ASTM A29/A29M** | Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought (Common procurement standard) | | **ASTM (USA)** | **ASTM A576** | Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon, Hot-Wrought, Special Quality (For more stringent requirements) | | **DIN / EN (Germany/EU)** | **1.1231 / C80W2** | EN 10083-2: Steels for quenching and tempering. Specifies the grade, with condition to be agreed. | | **JIS (Japan)** | **SWRH82A / SWRH82B** | High Carbon Steel Wire Rods (similar composition). As-rolled is a common supply condition for wire rod. | | **GB (China)** | **80#** | Quality Carbon Structural Steel (GB/T 699). Typically supplied in as-rolled or controlled rolled condition. | --- ### **Typical Manufacturing Sequence** 1. **Procurement:** Purchase AISI 1080 in as-rolled bars or shapes. 2. **Pre-Processing:** Remove scale via shot blasting, pickling, or machining. For critical parts, normalizing may be performed to refine the grain structure and improve machinability. 3. **Forming:** Shape the component via **hot forging, hot bending, or machining**. 4. **Heat Treatment:** Perform the critical **quench (oil/water) and temper** cycle to achieve final properties. 5. **Finishing:** Final grinding, shot peening, or coating. **Summary:** **AISI 1080 in the as-rolled condition is the fundamental, unactivated form of a high-performance steel.** It is a commodity material chosen for its **low initial cost and high transformative potential**. Its value is realized not in its delivered state, but through the skilled application of downstream thermal and mechanical processes. It is the workhorse raw material for forging shops, spring manufacturers, and toolmakers who possess the capability to heat-treat it into an exceptionally hard, strong, and wear-resistant final product. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1080 Steel, as rolled Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4876 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1080 Steel, as rolled Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
