## **Product Data Sheet: AISI 1118 Steel, As-Rolled**
---
### **1. Product Overview**
**AISI 1118** is a low-carbon, **direct-hardening grade** steel supplied in the **as-rolled (or hot-rolled)** condition. This state represents the most economical and common form in which this grade is provided. Unlike the sulfur-enhanced free-machining steels (e.g., 1117, 12L14), AISI 1118 is characterized by its **higher manganese content and controlled low sulfur level**, making it unsuitable for high-speed free-machining but excellent for applications requiring good through-hardenability, surface hardening via flame or induction, and better weldability.
The as-rolled condition means the steel has been shaped to its final dimensions (e.g., round bar, flat bar, plate) at high temperatures, resulting in a surface with **mill scale** and mechanical properties that are moderately improved over a normalized state due to the controlled finishing temperature.
**Key Characteristics of As-Rolled AISI 1118:**
* **Good Through-Hardenability:** The balanced carbon (0.14-0.20%) and elevated manganese (1.30-1.60%) content allow for effective hardening of larger sections than typical low-carbon steels, either through quenching and tempering or surface hardening methods.
* **Improved Weldability:** Lower sulfur and phosphorus levels compared to free-machining grades significantly reduce the risk of hot cracking, making it a suitable choice for fabrications requiring welding.
* **Good Cold Formability & Machinability:** In its as-rolled (soft) condition, it offers good ductility for bending and forming. Its machinability is fair, typical of a low-carbon steel without chip-breaking additives.
* **Cost-Effective Foundation:** The as-rolled product serves as a versatile, economical raw material for components that will undergo significant secondary processing like forging, machining, and heat treatment.

### **2. Chemical Composition (Standard % by Weight)**
The composition is optimized for hardenability and general-purpose use, not for free-machining.
| Element | Content (%) | Function & Implication |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.14 - 0.20 | Provides core strength and is the primary element for response to hardening. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.30 - 1.60 | **Key Element.** Significantly increases hardenability, allowing deeper and more uniform hardening upon quenching. Also aids in deoxidation. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 | Residual element, kept low to maintain toughness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 | **Kept Low.** This distinguishes it from 1117. Low sulfur improves weldability and hot workability but reduces machinability. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base metal. |

### **3. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (As-Rolled Condition)**
*Properties are representative for medium sections. The presence of mill scale is standard.*
| Property | Typical Value (Metric) | Typical Value (Imperial) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Tensile Strength** | 420 - 520 MPa | 61,000 - 75,000 psi |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 310 - 380 MPa | 45,000 - 55,000 psi |
| **Elongation (in 50 mm / 2 in)** | 25% - 35% | 25% - 35% |
| **Reduction of Area** | 50% - 65% | 50% - 65% |
| **Hardness** | 137 - 174 HB | 137 - 174 HB |
| **Surface Condition** | **Mill Scale** | Dark, oxidized layer from hot rolling. |
| **Machinability Rating** | ~ 65-70% (AISI 1212 = 100%) | Fair; requires more power and yields continuous chips. |

### **4. International Standards & Cross-References**
As-rolled AISI 1118 conforms to standard hot-rolled carbon steel bar specifications.
| Standard System | Equivalent Designation | Applicable Specification |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **ASTM / AISI (USA)** | AISI 1118 | ASTM A29 (Standard Spec. for Steel Bars, Carbon) |
| **SAE (USA)** | SAE 1118 | SAE J403 |
| **UNS (USA)** | G11180 | - |
| **DIN (Germany)** | 1.0725 | DIN 17222 / EN 10263-3 (Steel for cold heading and forging) |
| **JIS (Japan)** | SWRCH18A* | JIS G3507-1 (Carbon steel wire rods for cold heading) |
| **EN (Europe)** | 1.0725 | EN 10263-3 |
*Note: SWRCH18A is a close equivalent often used for cold heading, with similar C and Mn ranges.*

### **5. Primary Applications**
As-rolled AISI 1118 is selected as a versatile raw material for parts that require good core properties and will undergo significant secondary processing, particularly heat treatment.
* **Forging Blanks:** A prime choice for hot forging into components like gears, levers, connecting rods, and fasteners that will be heat-treated afterward.
* **Heat-Treated Components:** Parts destined for **quenching and tempering** to achieve a uniform, tempered martensite structure with good strength and toughness (e.g., shafts, pins, bolts).
* **Surface Hardened Parts:** Ideal for **induction hardening** or **flame hardening** to create a wear-resistant surface on gears, camshafts, and bearing journals, while the core remains tough.
* **General Fabrication:** Used for welded structures or parts where its better weldability (vs. free-machining steels) is an advantage, provided the design accommodates its lower as-rolled strength.
* **Cold Heading & Forming:** Suitable for moderate cold-forming operations to make bolts, nuts, and other fasteners, thanks to its good ductility.
---
### **6. Processing Notes**
* **Heat Treatment (Primary Use):** Excellently suited for **through-hardening (quench & temper)**. Typical process: Austenitize at 830-870°C (1525-1600°F), quench in oil or water (depending on section size), and temper to desired hardness (e.g., 25-45 HRC). Also excellent for **induction/flame hardening**.
* **Machining:** **Fair machinability.** Produces long, stringy chips. Use sharp tools, positive rake angles, and powerful chip breakers. Pre-annealing or normalizing can improve machinability for complex parts.
* **Weldability:** **Good** for a low-carbon steel. Standard arc welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW) can be used with common low-carbon electrodes/fillers. Pre-heat is generally not required for thin sections but is recommended for thick parts to manage cooling rates.
* **Cold Working:** Good ductility allows for bending, rolling, and cold heading. Annealing may be required between severe forming steps.
* **Surface Preparation:** Mill scale must be removed (via pickling, shot blasting, or machining) prior to most finishing operations, painting, or precise machining.
---
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is for general reference. The as-rolled condition can exhibit variations in properties based on the rolling mill's finishing temperature and cooling practice. For performance-critical applications, testing of the specific material lot is recommended. Always consult the relevant Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and material certifications before use.
