## **Product Data Sheet: AISI 11L17 Steel, Cold Drawn, Round Bar (19-32 mm / 0.75-1.25 in)**
---
### **1. Product Overview**
**AISI 11L17** is a **lead-treated, free-machining steel** belonging to the "12L14/11L17" family, renowned as one of the most machinable carbon steels available. The "L" denotes the addition of lead (Pb), which acts as an internal lubricant and chip breaker during machining. When supplied in the **cold drawn** condition, the material undergoes a precision forming process that enhances its mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish.
This datasheet specifies **cold drawn round bar** in the **19 mm to 32 mm (0.75 in to 1.25 in)** diameter range. This product is engineered for high-speed, high-volume production of intricate components where **superior surface finish, excellent chip control, and extended tool life are paramount**. It is the material of choice for the most demanding machining applications that prioritize production speed over weldability or hot workability.
**Key Advantages of Cold Drawn AISI 11L17:**
* **Exceptional Machinability:** The combined effect of sulfur, manganese, and lead provides unparalleled chip formation, allowing for very high cutting speeds and feeds, reduced power consumption, and superior surface finishes directly from the machine tool.
* **Enhanced Strength & Finish (Cold Drawn):** The cold drawing process increases tensile and yield strength while delivering a bright, smooth, scale-free surface ready for immediate machining or plating.
* **Superior Dimensional Consistency:** Offers tight diameter tolerances and excellent straightness, critical for automated screw machines and CNC lathes to minimize setup and ensure part consistency.
* **Excellent Chip Control:** Produces small, broken chips that are easy to evacuate, reducing machine downtime and improving safety in high-volume production environments.

### **2. Chemical Composition (Standard % by Weight)**
The composition is optimized for extreme machinability through synergistic additions of sulfur and lead.
| Element | Content (%) | Function & Implication |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.13 - 0.20 | Provides a small degree of core strength. Lower than 1117 for better machinability. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.70 - 1.00 | Works with sulfur to form chip-breaking MnS inclusions. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.04 - 0.09 | Intentionally added in higher amounts than in standard steels to further improve machinability and chip brittleness. |
| **Sulfur (S)** | 0.24 - 0.33 | **Very High.** Forms abundant MnS inclusions that are the primary chip breakers. |
| **Lead (Pb)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | **Critical Element.** Disperses as fine particles, acting as an internal lubricant at the tool-chip interface, reducing friction and heat. |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base metal. |

### **3. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Cold Drawn Condition)**
*Properties are indicative for this diameter range. Note the characteristically lower strength and higher ductility compared to AISI 1117.*
| Property | Typical Value (Metric) | Typical Value (Imperial) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Tensile Strength** | 420 - 550 MPa | 61,000 - 80,000 psi |
| **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 350 - 480 MPa | 51,000 - 70,000 psi |
| **Elongation (in 50 mm)** | 15% - 25% | 15% - 25% |
| **Hardness** | 137 - 183 HB | 137 - 183 HB |
| **Machinability Rating** | **~ 180%** (AISI 1212 = 100%) / **~ 140%** (vs. 12L14=100%) | Industry benchmark for free-machining. |
| **Density** | ~7.87 g/cm³ (Pb addition causes slight variation) | ~0.284 lb/in³ |

### **4. International Standards & Cross-References**
AISI 11L17 is a standard leaded free-machining grade. The cold drawn product conforms to relevant standards for bright steel.
| Standard System | Equivalent Designation | Applicable Specification (for Cold Finished Bar) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **UNS (USA)** | G11177 | - |
| **ASTM (USA)** | AISI 11L17 | ASTM A108 (Standard for Steel Bar, Carbon, Cold-Finished) |
| **SAE (USA)** | SAE 11L17 | SAE J403 |
| **DIN (Germany)** | **1.0722** (11SMnPb30) | DIN EN 10277-3 (Bright leaded steel) |
| **JIS (Japan)** | SUM22L* | JIS G4804 (Leaded free-cutting steel) |
| **EN (Europe)** | 11SMnPb30 | EN 10277-3 |
*Note: Exact equivalents vary; SUM22L is a common leaded free-cutting steel.*

### **5. Primary Applications**
This material is specified for non-critical, high-volume components where machining cost and speed are the dominant factors. It is **not suitable for heat treatment or high-stress applications**.
* **High-Volume Precision Parts:** Electrical connectors, fittings, fasteners, knobs, and screw machine products produced on Swiss-type and multi-spindle automatics.
* **Automotive (Non-Structural):** Door lock components, fuel system fittings, sensor housings, and various interior trim brackets.
* **Consumer Electronics & Hardware:** Connector bodies, small gears (unhardened), camera parts, and precision hardware.
* **Plumbing & General Fittings:** Nuts, bolts, and decorative plumbing fixtures where a good finish for plating is needed.
* **General Machined Components:** Any part requiring complex geometry and an excellent as-machined surface finish, with no subsequent heat treatment.
---
### **6. Critical Processing Notes**
* **Heat Treatment: NOT RECOMMENDED.** The high sulfur and lead content make it unsuitable for case hardening (carburizing) or through-hardening. Attempts to heat treat will result in poor mechanical properties and potential surface issues.
* **Machining: EXCELLENT.** This is its primary purpose. Use sharp tools, positive rake angles, and adequate coolant. Expect dramatically lower cutting forces and superior finishes compared to non-leaded steels.
* **Weldability: VERY POOR.** The high sulfur and lead content cause severe hot cracking. **Welding is prohibited** for any structural application.
* **Hot Working: NOT SUITABLE.** Lead can cause liquid metal embrittlement (hot shortness) at high temperatures, making forging or hot forming dangerous and impractical.
* **Plating/Coating:** Machines to a very fine surface finish ideal for subsequent plating (e.g., nickel, chrome, zinc). Proper cleaning to remove cutting fluids is essential.
* **Environmental & Safety:** Contains lead. Standard industrial hygiene practices for handling lead-containing metals must be followed during machining (e.g., proper ventilation, dust collection). Check local regulations for disposal of chips and swarf.
---
**Disclaimer:** This information is for technical reference. AISI 11L17 is a specialized material with significant processing limitations. Its use must be justified by machining economics. Always consult the supplier's certification, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and local environmental regulations before procurement and processing.
