AISI 1144 Steel, as rolled Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1144 Steel, Hot-Rolled (As-Rolled) Condition** **Overview** AISI 1144 is a high-strength, medium-carbon, resulfurized and phosphorized free-machining steel, widely recognized as a "stress-proof" grade. Supplied in the **hot-rolled (as-rolled)** condition, this product represents the most economical and readily available form of the material, directly from the steel mill's rolling process without subsequent heat treatment or cold finishing. The as-rolled state provides a robust combination of good machinability, inherent high yield strength, and excellent wear resistance, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial components that may undergo further machining, forging, or heat treatment. **Key Features & Advantages** * **High As-Rolled Strength:** Naturally achieves a higher yield and tensile strength compared to standard non-resulturized grades (like 1045) in the same condition, often exceeding 85 ksi (586 MPa) yield strength directly from the mill. * **Good Machinability:** The elevated sulfur and phosphorus content promotes the formation of chip-breaking inclusions, enabling good machining performance despite its higher strength. * **"Stress-Proof" Characteristics:** Exhibits good resistance to deformation under load and maintains dimensional stability, making it suitable for stressed components without additional processing. * **Cost-Effective Base Material:** The most economical supply form, ideal for applications where surface finish is not critical or where the material will be fully machined, forged, or heat-treated. * **Good Wear Resistance:** The higher carbon content and as-rolled hardness contribute to better resistance against surface wear. --- **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** The chemistry of AISI 1144 is carefully balanced to achieve its "stress-proof" properties. | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.40 – 0.48 | Provides high core strength, hardness, and wear resistance. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 – 1.65 | Increases hardenability, strength, and combines with sulfur. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | 0.04 – 0.09 | **Elevated.** Strengthens the ferrite matrix, significantly boosting the "stress-proof" yield strength and improving machinability. | | **Sulfur (S)** | 0.24 – 0.33 | **Elevated.** Primary free-machining additive; forms abundant manganese sulfide (MnS) inclusions for excellent chip breaking. | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 – 0.35 | Deoxidizer and strengthens ferrite. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G11440 * **ASTM:** A29 (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought and Cold-Finished) * **SAE:** J403, J412 (SAE 1144) * **Common Brand Names:** Often referred to as "Stressproof"® steel in its processed forms. --- **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot-Rolled, As-Rolled Condition)** *Note: Properties are for hot-rolled material and can vary based on the final rolling temperature, cooling rate, and section size.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Modulus of Elasticity** | 200 - 210 GPa (29,000 – 30,500 ksi) | | **Machinability (Comparison)** | ~80% (Based on 100% for AISI 1212) – **Good** for its strength level. | | **Tensile Strength** | 655 – 795 MPa (95 – 115 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | **550 – 690 MPa (80 – 100 ksi)** – **A key distinguishing feature in the as-rolled state.** | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 15% – 22% | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% – 55% | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 201 – 255 | | **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with a characteristic dark blue-gray **mill scale** (iron oxide layer). | --- **3. Product Applications** AISI 1144 in the as-rolled condition is a versatile starting material for components requiring strength, stability, and machinability. * **Forging Blanks:** Excellent stock material for hot-forged parts like automotive crankshafts, connecting rods, lever arms, and other high-strength forged components. * **Machined Components:** Shafts, pins, bolts, studs, and gear blanks where the entire surface will be machined away, removing the mill scale. * **Parts for Subsequent Heat Treatment:** Components like axles, spindles, and rollers that will be through-hardened (quenched & tempered) or surface hardened after initial machining. * **General Machinery Parts:** Gears, couplings, cams, and hydraulic component bodies that require machining and inherent strength. * **Agricultural and Off-Road Equipment:** High-stress components like plow beams, pivot pins, and linkage parts. --- **4. Important Considerations** * **Mill Scale:** The surface is covered with a tightly adherent oxide layer (mill scale) which must be removed via pickling, shot blasting, or machining for most finishing operations, painting, or effective welding. * **Weldability:** The high sulfur and phosphorus content makes AISI 1144 **generally not recommended for fusion welding**. It is highly prone to hot cracking and severe weld embrittlement. * **Dimensional Tolerances:** Hot-rolled products have standard commercial tolerances which are wider than those for cold-finished bars. Suitable where dimensions are not critical or will be fully machined. * **Internal Stress:** The as-rolled condition may contain residual thermal stresses from uneven cooling. For critical machining, stress relieving is often recommended prior to final machining. * **Further Processing:** This is the standard feedstock for producing cold drawn, turned, or heat-treated (normalized, annealed, Q&T) AISI 1144 products. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1144 Steel, as rolled Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <4997 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1144 Steel, as rolled Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
