### **Product Datasheet: AISI 1340H Steel, Annealed**
**Product Description:**
This is a high-quality, medium-carbon, hardenable alloy steel supplied in the annealed condition. The specific heat treatment protocol—annealing at 800°C followed by a very slow furnace cool (11°C/hour) to 600°C, then air cooling—is designed to produce an ideal microstructure for subsequent machining and final heat treatment. This process maximizes softness and ductility, minimizes residual stresses, and ensures a consistent, uniform microstructure throughout the 25 mm (1 inch) diameter round bar, optimizing it for demanding applications.
**Key Features:**
* **Excellent Machinability:** The full annealed condition provides superior chip formation and extended tool life.
* **Uniform Hardness & Structure:** Guaranteed homogeneity across the entire cross-section of the bar.
* **Predictable Hardenability:** The "H" designation ensures consistent response to quenching and tempering within specified hardenability bands.
* **Good Strength & Toughness Balance:** Serves as an optimal starting condition for components requiring high strength after heat treatment.
---
### **1. Chemical Composition**
The composition adheres to standard AISI 1340H limits, which are broader than standard 1340 to guarantee hardenability.
| Element | Composition Range (%) |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.37 - 0.44 |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 - 1.65 |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.035 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.040 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance |
*Note: The "H" grade includes controlled ranges for elements like Manganese to ensure consistent hardenability.*
---
### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties (Annealed Condition)**
* **Typical Hardness:** **HB 183 - 217** (Approx. HRB 88 - 95)
* **Tensile Strength:** ~ 580 - 655 MPa (84 - 95 ksi)
* **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** ~ 340 - 415 MPa (49 - 60 ksi)
* **Elongation (in 50 mm):** ~ 22% - 28%
* **Reduction of Area:** ~ 45% - 55%
* **Machinability (Compared to 1% C steel):** ~ 65%
**Microstructure:** Fine lamellar pearlite with ferrite, characteristic of a full anneal.
---
### **3. Product Specification & International Standards**
* **Product Form:** Hot-rolled round bar, 25 mm diameter (1 inch).
* **Condition:** Annealed as per specified cycle (800°C → FC at 11°C/hr to 600°C → AC).
* **Applicable International Standards:**
* **AISI / SAE:** AISI 1340H, SAE J1268 (Hardenability Bands)
* **ASTM:** ASTM A304 (Standard Specification for Carbon and Alloy Steel Bars Subject to End-Quench Hardenability Requirements)
* **UNS:** G13400
* **European (Similar):** 1.5534 (34Cr4H)
* **Japanese (Similar):** SCr440H
---
### **4. Typical Applications**
This annealed 1340H bar is the preferred raw material for components that require extensive machining before being hardened and tempered to high strength. Common end-uses include:
* **Automotive:** Gears, shafts, axles, spindles, and high-strength fasteners.
* **Industrial Machinery:** Critical pins, connecting rods, hydraulic piston rods, and machine tool components.
* **Agricultural Equipment:** Gears, drive shafts, and high-wear parts.
* **General Engineering:** Any component requiring a good balance of machinability in the "soft" state and high strength/toughness in the final hardened state.
---
### **5. Subsequent Heat Treatment Recommendation**
* **Forging:** Heat to 1150-1200°C (2100-2200°F). Do not forge below 850°C (1550°F). Anneal after forging to relieve stresses.
* **Hardening:** Austenitize at 830-850°C (1525-1560°F), quench in oil.
* **Tempering:** Temper immediately after quenching at the temperature required to achieve the desired final hardness and strength (typically 150-650°C / 300-1200°F).
* **Surface Hardening:** Well-suited for processes like induction or flame hardening due to its controlled carbon content and hardenability.
**Disclaimer:** The values provided are typical. For critical applications, specific testing and validation against project requirements are essential.
