AISI 1536 High Manganese Carbon Steel, Hot Rolled Bar Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1536 High Manganese Carbon Steel, Hot Rolled Bar** **Overview** AISI 1536 is a high-manganese, medium-carbon steel supplied in the economical **hot rolled bar** condition. As a member of the "15xx" series, it represents a **manganese alloy steel** characterized by a significantly elevated manganese content (1.20-1.50%) compared to standard carbon steels. This composition provides an excellent balance of high strength, good toughness, and superior hardenability. Supplied in the as-rolled state, AISI 1536 serves as a versatile and cost-effective raw material for demanding components that require further processing such as forging, machining, and subsequent heat treatment (normalizing, quenching & tempering). It is a preferred grade for applications where the enhanced properties of manganese are required without the higher cost of chromium or nickel alloy steels. **Key Features & Advantages** * **High Strength & Excellent Hardenability:** The combination of medium carbon and high manganese provides deep and uniform hardenability, allowing the steel to be effectively through-hardened in substantial cross-sections to achieve high tensile and yield strength. * **Good Impact Toughness:** Manganese promotes a fine-grained structure which, combined with proper heat treatment, results in good resistance to shock and impact loading, making it suitable for dynamic applications. * **Good Wear Resistance:** In the heat-treated condition, it offers respectable resistance to abrasion and surface wear for components in sliding or rolling contact. * **Excellent Forgeability:** Highly suitable for hot forging operations, with manganese improving high-temperature workability and contributing to good mechanical properties in the final forged part. * **Cost-Effective Performance Upgrade:** Offers a significant performance advantage over plain carbon steels (e.g., 1036, 1045) and serves as a more economical alternative to alloy steels like 4140 for many medium-duty applications. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.30 – 0.37 | Provides core strength and hardenability. This medium-carbon level is optimized for achieving high strength after heat treatment while maintaining reasonable ductility. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.20 – 1.50 | **Primary Alloying Element.** Significantly enhances hardenability, allowing deeper penetration of hardness during quenching. Also contributes substantially to strength and promotes a fine grain structure. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 (max) | Residual element, kept low to ensure good toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 (max) | Residual element, kept low. **This is not a free-machining steel.** | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 – 0.35 | Acts as a deoxidizer; contributes to strength. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G15360 * **AISI/SAE:** 1536 * **ASTM:** A29 (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought) * **ASTM:** A519 (for mechanical tubing) * **DIN (Germany):** ~1.1167 / 38Mn6 (Very close analogue; 38Mn6 is often considered the direct equivalent) * **EN (Europe):** 1.1167 / 38Mn6 * **JIS (Japan):** SMn438 (Similar) --- ### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot Rolled, As-Rolled Condition)** *Note: These are typical properties in the as-supplied state. Final service properties are developed through heat treatment.* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Tensile Strength** | 590 – 740 MPa (86 – 107 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 360 – 520 MPa (52 – 75 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 17% – 22% | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% – 55% | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 185 – 235 | | **Machinability (Comparison)** | Fair (~45% of AISI 1212). Requires robust tooling and appropriate cutting parameters. | | **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with mill scale. | --- ### **3. Product Applications** AISI 1536 hot rolled bars are commonly used as starting stock for high-strength, durable components across various industries. * **Forged Components:** Crankshafts, connecting rods, lever arms, and other high-stress forged parts. * **Shafts and Axles:** Drive shafts, axle shafts, transmission shafts, and roller shafts that will be through-hardened for increased fatigue strength. * **Gear and Sprocket Blanks:** Stock for medium to heavy-duty gears, pinions, and sprockets destined for heat treatment. * **High-Strength Fasteners:** Large bolts, studs, and pins requiring tensile strengths exceeding Grade 8 specifications. * **Agricultural and Construction Equipment:** Pins, bushings, spindles, and cutting edges subject to severe wear and impact. * **General Heavy-Duty Machinery Parts:** High-strength brackets, hydraulic cylinder components, and press frames. --- ### **4. Important Considerations** * **Not a Free-Machining Steel:** Contains low sulfur. Machining in the as-rolled state is more demanding than for free-cutting steels. **Normalizing prior to extensive machining is highly recommended** to improve consistency, tool life, and dimensional stability. * **Heat Treatment is Essential for Service Properties:** This steel achieves its full potential (high strength, wear resistance) through heat treatment. Common processes include normalizing (pre-machining), quenching & tempering (for high strength), and surface hardening (flame/induction for wear surfaces). * **Mill Scale:** The surface oxide layer must be removed via pickling, shot blasting, or machining prior to most finishing operations, coating, or welding. * **Weldability:** Can be welded with proper procedures, but requires caution. **Preheating (200-300°C / 400-570°F) is strongly recommended** to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking in the hardenable heat-affected zone (HAZ). Use of low-hydrogen electrodes and post-weld heat treatment is advisable for critical applications. * **Comparison to 1036/1045:** AISI 1536 offers vastly superior hardenability and strength due to its high manganese content, allowing effective heat treatment of larger sections. * **Comparison to 1340/1345:** Very similar in performance and often interchangeable. 1536 and 1340 have nearly identical carbon and manganese ranges, with 1536 being the more commonly referenced grade in many industries for this composition. * **"H" Grade Availability:** An **AISI 1536H** grade exists for applications requiring guaranteed hardenability bands (per SAE J1268), ensuring predictable and consistent heat treatment results for critical components. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided is based on typical industry specifications for reference purposes. Actual properties may vary based on manufacturer, production parameters, and final processing. For engineering applications, always consult certified material test reports and relevant application standards. The as-rolled condition is a starting point; final part performance is critically dependent on subsequent manufacturing and heat treatment processes. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1536 High Manganese Carbon Steel, Hot Rolled Bar Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5038 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1536 High Manganese Carbon Steel, Hot Rolled Bar Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
