### **Product Introduction: AISI 4042 Alloy Steel**
**AISI 4042** is a versatile and widely used medium-carbon, chromium-molybdenum (Cr-Mo) alloy steel. It belongs to the family of alloy steels known for their excellent hardenability, good strength, and toughness, especially in the heat-treated condition. The addition of molybdenum and chromium enhances its depth hardening capability, wear resistance, and resistance to softening at elevated temperatures compared to plain carbon steels. AISI 4042 is a popular choice for components requiring a combination of high strength, good fatigue resistance, and durability under stress.
#### **1. Chemical Composition**
The composition is key to its properties. The following table outlines the standard chemical composition range (in weight percentage).
| Element | Content Range (%) | Primary Function |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.40 - 0.45 | Provides core hardness and strength. |
| **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.60 - 0.90 | Increases hardenability and strength. |
| **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.035 | Impurity (kept low for toughness). |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.040 | Impurity (affects machinability). |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | Deoxidizer, increases strength. |
| **Chromium (Cr)** | 0.20 - 0.35 | Enhances hardenability, wear & corrosion resistance. |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 0.15 - 0.25 | Improves hardenability, strength at high temperatures, and reduces temper embrittlement. |
*Note: Sulfur may be intentionally increased in "Resulturized" grades (e.g., 4042R) for improved machinability.*
#### **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
Properties can vary significantly with heat treatment. The values below are typical for annealed and heat-treated conditions.
* **Density:** 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³)
* **Melting Point:** ~ 1427°C (2600°F)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 190 - 210 GPa (29 x 10⁶ psi)
**Typical Mechanical Properties (After Quenching & Tempering):**
* **Tensile Strength:** 850 - 1000 MPa (123 - 145 ksi)
* **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** 650 - 800 MPa (94 - 116 ksi)
* **Elongation (in 50mm):** 15 - 20%
* **Reduction in Area:** 40 - 50%
* **Hardness (Brinell):** 250 - 300 HB (typical for tempered condition; can reach 50+ HRC when quenched)
* **Impact Toughness (Charpy V-notch):** Good to excellent, depending on tempering temperature.
#### **3. Heat Treatment**
AISI 4042 responds excellently to standard heat treatments:
* **Annealing:** Heated to ~843°C (1550°F) and slowly cooled to relieve stresses and improve machinability.
* **Normalizing:** Heated to ~871°C (1600°F) and air-cooled to refine grain structure.
* **Hardening (Quenching):** Heated to ~830-850°C (1525-1560°F) and quenched in oil or water. This achieves maximum hardness.
* **Tempering:** Reheated to a temperature between 205-650°C (400-1200°F) after quenching to achieve the desired balance of strength, hardness, and toughness.
#### **4. Product Applications**
AISI 4042 is a workhorse steel in various demanding industries:
* **Automotive:** Gears (differential, transmission), shafts (crankshafts, axle shafts), connecting rods, steering components, and high-strength bolts.
* **Agricultural Machinery:** Heavy-duty gears, drive shafts, and spindles.
* **Oil & Gas:** Parts for drilling equipment, pump components, and valve parts requiring strength and wear resistance.
* **General Manufacturing:** Machine tool parts, jigs, fixtures, and other components subjected to high stress and wear.
* **Forgings:** Commonly used for drop and hammer forgings due to its good forgeability.
#### **5. International Standards & Equivalent Grades**
AISI 4042 is recognized under various international standards. Key equivalents include:
| Standard | Designation |
| :--- | :--- |
| **AISI / SAE (USA)** | 4042 |
| **UNS** | G40420 |
| **ASTM (USA)** | A322 (for bar), A331 |
| **DIN (Germany)** | 42CrMo4 (Very close, slight compositional differences) |
| **EN (European)** | 1.7225 |
| **JIS (Japan)** | SCM440 |
| **GB (China)** | 42CrMo |
#### **6. Key Advantages**
* **Excellent Hardenability:** Allows for deep and uniform hardening in moderately thick sections.
* **Good Strength/Toughness Balance:** Can be tempered to achieve an optimal combination for specific applications.
* **Good Fatigue Strength:** Suitable for cyclic loading applications.
* **Wear Resistance:** Enhanced surface hardness after heat treatment provides good resistance to abrasion.
* **Wide Availability:** Readily available in various forms (bar, forging, plate).
**Disclaimer:** The information provided is for general reference. Specific properties and performance are dependent on exact composition, manufacturing process, heat treatment, and section size. Always consult material data sheets and qualified engineers for critical application specifications.
