Industeel CLC 1.2312 Prehardened Mold Steel (300HB/32HRC) with Improved Machinability Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: **Industeel CLC 1.2312 Prehardened Mold Steel (300 HB / 32 HRC) with Improved Machinability** ### **Product Overview** Industeel CLC 1.2312 is a premium-grade, chromium-molybdenum alloyed mold steel supplied in a prehardened and tempered condition. Its primary defining characteristics are a guaranteed uniform hardness of approximately 300 HB (32 HRC) throughout the entire section and significantly enhanced machinability compared to standard prehardened steels. This combination makes it an ideal choice for manufacturing large, complex plastic molds and die-casting tooling where excellent machining performance, good polishability, and reliable through-hardness are critical for productivity and dimensional stability. ### **Key Features & Benefits** * **Improved Machinability:** Specially treated to offer superior machinability in its prehardened state. This allows for faster machining speeds, reduced tool wear, longer tool life, and better surface finish during milling, drilling, and turning, leading to shorter manufacturing cycles and lower production costs. * **Uniform Prehardened Condition:** Supplied at a consistent hardness of ~300 HB (32 HRC), eliminating the need for subsequent heat treatment (quenching and tempering) for many applications. This prevents risks of distortion, cracking, and size change associated with post-machining heat treatment. * **Excellent Polishability & Texture Transfer:** Possesses a homogeneous, fine-grained structure that allows it to be polished to very high surface finishes (e.g., SPI-SPE A1/A2) and is well-suited for photo-etching and texturing processes commonly used in plastic injection molds. * **Good Wear Resistance & Toughness:** The balanced alloy composition and prehardened condition provide a good compromise between resistance to abrasion (from filled plastics or mild erosive wear) and toughness to withstand operational stresses. * **Good Dimensional Stability:** The through-hardening and stable tempered structure ensure minimal dimensional changes during tool manufacturing and in service under moderate thermal and mechanical loads. ### **Typical Applications** Industeel CLC 1.2312 is primarily used in the manufacture of: * **Large & Medium Plastic Injection Molds:** For automotive components, household appliances, electronic housings, and general industrial parts. * **Mold Bases & Inserts:** As a standard material for high-quality mold plates and core/cavity inserts requiring stable prehardened properties. * **Die Casting Tooling:** For non-ferrous metals (aluminum, zinc, magnesium) for components like housings, brackets, and covers, where improved machinability is a major advantage. * **Compression Molds and Forming Tools.** ### **International Standards & Designations** Industeel CLC 1.2312 corresponds to the following international standard grades: | Region/Standard | Standard Designation | Similar/Equivalent Grade | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **EUR (EN)** | **1.2312** (40CrMnNiMo8-6-4) | Designation slightly modified for proprietary version. | | **Germany (W-Nr.)** | **1.2312** | | | **USA (AISI/ASTM)** | **P20 Modified** (with improved machinability) | Often referred to as "P20+" or "P20 Enhanced." | | **USA (UNS)** | **T51620** | For general P20-type steels. | | **Japan (JIS)** | **PX5** (Modified) | | | **Sweden (SS)** | **718 (Modified)** | Refers to enhanced machinability versions of IMPAX/718 type. | *Note: "CLC" is Industeel's proprietary brand designation, indicating specific melting and processing routes that deliver the improved properties.* ### **Chemical Composition (Typical %)** The composition is optimized for prehardening, machinability, and polishability. | Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) | | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.35 - 0.40 | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 0.15 - 0.25 | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.20 - 0.40 | **Nickel (Ni)** | 0.90 - 1.10 | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.40 - 1.60 | **Sulfur (S)** | **< 0.005** (Very Low) | | **Chromium (Cr)** | 1.80 - 2.00 | **Phosphorus (P)** | **< 0.015** (Very Low) | **Key to Machinability:** The very low sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) content is a deliberate metallurgical choice. Unlike free-machining steels that use high sulfur, this "clean steel" approach minimizes the formation of non-metallic inclusions (MnS stringers), which are detrimental to polishability, etching uniformity, and weldability. The improved machinability in CLC 1.2312 is achieved through precise control of microstructure and hardening, not through high-sulfur additives. ### **Physical & Mechanical Properties** * **Delivery Hardness:** **300 - 330 HB** (approx. **31 - 34 HRC**). Typically guaranteed at **300 HB min**. * **Tensile Strength:** ~1000 - 1100 MPa * **Yield Strength (0.2% offset):** ~800 - 900 MPa * **Elongation at Break:** ~12 - 15% * **Reduction of Area:** ~35 - 45% * **Impact Toughness (Charpy V, longitudinal):** Typically > 20 J at room temperature. * **Thermal Conductivity:** ~36 W/m·K (at 20°C) * **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion:** ~12.5 x 10⁻⁶ /K (20-100°C) ### **Processing Guidelines** * **Machining:** Perform in the prehardened state. Due to its enhanced machinability, higher cutting speeds and feed rates than for standard 300 HB steels can often be used. Always use sharp tools with positive rake angles and adequate cooling. * **Welding:** Possible with proper precautions. Preheating to 250-300°C is recommended. Use low-hydrogen electrodes or filler wires with matching or slightly lower carbon content (e.g., AWS A5.28 ER80S-D2). Post-weld tempering at 400-500°C is advisable for critical applications to relieve stresses. * **Stress Relieving:** If extensive machining is performed on large blocks, stress relieving at 500-550°C followed by slow cooling can help maintain dimensional stability. * **Nitriding & Surface Treatments:** Well-suited for nitriding (gas, plasma) to further enhance surface hardness and wear resistance without significant core property changes. In summary, **Industeel CLC 1.2312** represents an advanced evolution of the classic P20/1.2312 grade, where proprietary processing delivers exceptional machinability without compromising the polishability, weldability, and through-hardness consistency required for high-performance, large-format mold making. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Industeel CLC 1.2312 Prehardened Mold Steel (300HB/32HRC) with Improved Machinability Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5243 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Industeel CLC 1.2312 Prehardened Mold Steel (300HB/32HRC) with Improved Machinability Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
