Slow, uniform cooling is recommended. * **Plasma & Laser Cutting:** Excellent results; minimal heat-affected zone (HAZ). * **Mechanical Cutting (Shearing, Sawing):** Suitable; requires high-quality tooling designed for high-strength steels. ### **5.2 Welding (A Critical Advantage)** Astralloy 4800® is renowned for its superior weldability in its hardness class. * **Preheat Temperature:** **100-150°C (212-300°F)** is typically sufficient for most thicknesses, significantly lower than for 500+ HB grades. * **Interpass Temperature:** Maintain below **250°C (480°F)**. * **Filler Metal:** Use low-hydrogen electrodes/wires with **matching or slightly under-matching strength** (e.g., 480-550 MPa yield strength). Common choices include AWS E11018-M, ER110S-G, or equivalent. * **Post-Weld Treatment:** **Stress relieving is generally not required** for most applications, but slow cooling under insulation is recommended. ### **5.3 Forming & Machining** * **Cold Bending:** Possible with a minimum bend radius of **4-5 times the plate thickness (t)**. * **Machining:** Requires carbide-tipped tools with positive rake angles, adequate cooling, and lower speeds/feeds than mild steel. --- ## **6.
