### **Product Datasheet: ATI Allvac® VascoJet® 1000 Ultra-High-Strength Steel (Q+T Condition)**
**ATI Allvac® VascoJet® 1000** is a cobalt-nickel secondary hardening ultra-high-strength steel, representing the pinnacle of commercially available strength-to-toughness combinations. It was developed specifically for aerospace applications requiring **extreme strength, excellent fracture toughness, and good stress corrosion cracking resistance**. The **1010°C (1850°F) Quench and Temper (Q+T)** heat treatment process unlocks its unparalleled mechanical properties.
#### **1. Key Characteristics & Advantages**
* **Unmatched Strength-Toughness Combination:** Achieves tensile strengths exceeding **1,930 MPa (280 ksi)** while maintaining exceptional fracture toughness, a rare and critical combination.
* **Secondary Hardening:** Gains strength and hardness during tempering due to the precipitation of fine intermetallic phases, allowing for high-temperature stability.
* **Excellent Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance:** Superior to many other ultra-high-strength steels like 4340 or 300M, making it suitable for demanding environments.
* **Deep Hardenability:** Can be through-hardened in substantial sections with minimal distortion due to its high alloy content and air-hardening capability.
* **Good Weldability (with precautions):** Can be welded using proper techniques, which is exceptional for a steel at this strength level.
#### **2. Standard Specifications & International Designations**
* **Proprietary Grade:** VascoJet 1000 is a trademarked grade. It is not covered by common AISI/SAE standards.
* **AMS:** Often supplied to meet the requirements of **AMS 6528** (Steel, Corrosion-Resistant, Investment Castings) or customer-specific aerospace material specifications.
* **U.S. Military:** Conforms to **MIL-S-89485**.
* **EURONORM / ISO:** No direct equivalent. It is typically specified under proprietary or project-specific designations in international programs.
#### **3. Chemical Composition (Typical, Weight %)**
| Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.23 - 0.27 | **Cobalt (Co)** | 12.00 - 13.00 |
| **Nickel (Ni)** | 10.00 - 11.00 | **Chromium (Cr)** | 2.50 - 3.25 |
| **Molybdenum (Mo)** | 1.20 - 1.50 | **Vanadium (V)** | 0.07 - 0.12 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.10 max | **Manganese (Mn)** | 0.10 max |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.005 | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.010 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance |
#### **4. Heat Treatment: 1010°C (1850°F) Quench & Temper**
This specific thermal cycle is critical for developing the optimal microstructure:
* **Austenitizing:** Heat to **1010°C (1850°F)** and hold to achieve full solutioning of alloying elements.
* **Quenching:** Cool in **air or positive pressure gas**. The high alloy content ensures full martensite transformation with low risk of distortion or cracking.
* **Cryogenic Treatment:** A sub-zero treatment (e.g., -73°C / -100°F) is typically performed immediately after quenching to transform retained austenite and maximize stability.
* **Tempering (Double or Triple Temper):** Performed at **480°C to 510°C (900°F to 950°F)**. This is where **secondary hardening** occurs, precipitating complex (Co, Mo, Ni) intermetallics, leading to peak strength and toughness.
* **Final Hardness:** Typically **HRC 54 - 58**, resulting in its ultra-high strength.
#### **5. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (After Q+T)**
* **Density:** 7.99 g/cm³ (0.289 lb/in³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 200 GPa (29 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Ultimate Tensile Strength:** **1,930 - 2,070 MPa (280 - 300 ksi)**
* **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset):** **1,790 - 1,930 MPa (260 - 280 ksi)**
* **Elongation:** 10 - 14%
* **Reduction in Area:** 45 - 55%
* **Fracture Toughness (KIc):** **110 - 130 MPa√m (100 - 120 ksi√in)** – Exceptional at this strength level.
* **Hardness:** **54 - 58 HRC**
#### **6. Primary Applications**
VascoJet 1000 is reserved for the most demanding aerospace structural components:
* **Aircraft Landing Gear Components:** Critical parts such as pistons, rods, and structural links for fighter jets and high-performance aircraft.
* **Rocket Motor Cases & Launch Vehicle Components**
* **Arrestor Hooks & Catapult Components** on aircraft carriers.
* **High-Stress Airframe Fittings and Forgings**
* **Critical Fasteners and Pins** in safety-of-flight systems.
* **Race Car and Motorsport Suspension Components** (high-end applications).
#### **7. Availability & Processing Notes**
* **Forms Available:** Primarily available as premium **Vacuum Induction Melted + Vacuum Arc Remelted (VIM-VAR)** forgings, billets, and bars to ensure ultra-cleanliness and homogeneity.
* **Machining:** Must be machined in the annealed or normalized condition. Finish machining after heat treatment is difficult and typically limited to grinding or EDM.
* **ATI Allvac® Expertise:** ATI provides this advanced material with stringent quality controls, including ultrasonic inspection, to meet the critical integrity requirements of aerospace and defense applications.
