### **Schmolz + Bickenbach Cryodur® 2379 (D-2) - High-Carbon High-Chromium Cold Work Tool Steel**
**Introduction**
Cryodur® 2379 is a premium high-carbon, high-chromium ledeburitic (air-hardening) cold work tool steel manufactured by Schmolz + Bickenbach, a global leader in specialty steel production. It corresponds to the classic AISI D2 / DIN 1.2379 grade. This steel is renowned for its exceptional **wear resistance**, high **compressive strength**, and good **dimensional stability** during heat treatment. It is a versatile choice for demanding applications where resistance to abrasive wear and moderate corrosion is paramount.
**Key Features & Advantages**
* **Outstanding Wear Resistance:** Primarily due to its high carbon and chromium content, which forms a large volume of hard, complex carbides in the microstructure.
* **Good Dimensional Stability:** Exhibits minimal distortion during the air or oil quenching process, crucial for precision tools and dies.
* **High Compressive Strength:** Can withstand high pressures without deformation, suitable for forming and stamping applications.
* **Moderate Corrosion Resistance:** The high chromium content provides better corrosion resistance compared to lower-alloyed tool steels (like O1 or A2), though it is not a stainless steel.
* **Excellent Through-Hardenability:** Can be hardened to high uniform hardness in large cross-sections.
**International Standard Designations**
| Standard | Designation |
| :--- | :--- |
| **AISI** | D2 |
| **DIN / EN / W-Nr.** | 1.2379 / X153CrMoV12 |
| **JIS** | SKD11 |
| **ISO** | 160CrMoV12 |
| **GB (China)** | Cr12Mo1V1 |
**Chemical Composition (%)**
The typical composition is fundamental to Cryodur® 2379's properties.
| Carbon (C) | Chromium (Cr) | Molybdenum (Mo) | Vanadium (V) | Silicon (Si) | Manganese (Mn) |
| :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: | :---: |
| 1.50 - 1.60 | 11.00 - 12.00 | 0.70 - 0.90 | 0.90 - 1.10 | 0.10 - 0.40 | 0.15 - 0.45 |
*Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder. Small amounts of other elements like Phosphorus (P) and Sulfur (S) are kept at very low levels.*
**Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Typical values at room temperature in annealed & hardened conditions.*
| Property | Value / Condition |
| :--- | :--- |
| **Density** | 7.70 g/cm³ |
| **Thermal Conductivity** | ~20.0 W/(m·K) (at 20°C) |
| **Coefficient of Thermal Expansion** | ~10.5 x 10⁻⁶/K (20-200°C) |
| **Hardness (Annealed)** | ≤ 250 HB |
| **Hardness (Hardened & Tempered)** | 58 - 62 HRC (typical working hardness, depends on tempering temperature) |
| **Elastic Modulus** | ~210 GPa |
**Heat Treatment**
* **Soft Annealing:** Heat to 780 - 800°C, slow cool to 650°C, then air cool. Target hardness: ≤ 250 HB.
* **Stress Relieving (after machining):** 600 - 650°C, slow cool.
* **Hardening:** Pre-heat at 750-800°C, then austenitize at **1020 - 1040°C** (exact temperature depends on desired toughness vs. wear resistance). Soak adequately, then quench in **air (preferred for minimal distortion)** or oil.
* **Tempering:** **Mandatory immediately after quenching.** Typically double or triple tempered at **180 - 250°C** for 58-62 HRC, or at **400 - 540°C** for lower hardness (54-58 HRC) with increased toughness. *Note: Avoid the tempering range of 250-400°C due to risk of decreased toughness.*
**Typical Applications**
Cryodur® 2379 (D-2) is ideally suited for long-run production tools subjected to severe abrasive wear.
* **Blanking & Punching Dies:** For sheet metal, particularly for abrasive materials (e.g., plastics, composites, fiber-reinforced materials, pre-coated metals).
* **Forming Tools & Rolls:** Cold forming rolls, thread rolling dies, bending tools.
* **Shear & Slitter Knives:** Industrial knives for cutting hard or abrasive materials.
* **Powder Compaction Dies:** For compacting metal or ceramic powders.
* **Precision Gauges & Measuring Tools:** Where dimensional stability and wear life are critical.
* **Other Tooling:** Lamination dies, drawing dies, and wear plates.
**Availability**
Schmolz + Bickenbach supplies Cryodur® 2379 in various forms: forged and rolled bars, flats, blocks, and pre-finished precision ground stock.
