### **Product Datasheet: Assab Steels DF-3 Oil-Hardening Cold Work Tool Steel**
**Assab Steels DF-3** is a high-quality, versatile oil-hardening non-shrinking chromium-tungsten tool steel. It is renowned for its excellent dimensional stability during heat treatment, good wear resistance, and balanced toughness. As a classic and economical cold work steel, DF-3 is a reliable choice for a wide range of tooling applications requiring a combination of hardness, machinability, and minimal distortion.
#### **1. Key Characteristics & Advantages**
* **Minimal Distortion & Dimensional Stability:** Exhibits very low volume change and minimal distortion during oil quenching, making it ideal for intricate tools and precise gauges.
* **Good Wear Resistance:** Provides sufficient wear resistance for many cold work applications, extending tool life.
* **Good Machinability & Grindability:** Can be easily machined and ground in the annealed condition, reducing manufacturing time and cost.
* **Shallow Hardenability:** As an oil-hardening grade, it has a shallower hardening depth compared to air-hardening steels, which can be advantageous for some applications requiring a hard surface with a tough core.
* **Good Resistance to Carburization & Decarburization:** Requires less stock removal for cleanup after heat treatment.
* **Cost-Effective:** Provides an excellent balance of performance and cost for many standard tooling applications.
#### **2. Standard Specifications & International Designations**
* **Assab / Uddeholm:** DF-3
* **AISI / ASTM:** O1 (Direct Equivalent)
* **DIN / EN:** 1.2510
* **JIS:** SKS3
* **ISO:** 4957: TC105
* **UNS:** T31501
#### **3. Chemical Composition (Typical, Weight %)**
| Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Carbon (C)** | 0.90 - 1.00 | **Chromium (Cr)** | 0.50 - 0.70 |
| **Tungsten (W)** | 0.50 - 0.70 | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.00 - 1.20 |
| **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 - 0.35 | **Vanadium (V)** | 0.05 - 0.15 |
| **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.025 | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.025 |
| **Iron (Fe)** | Balance |
#### **4. Typical Heat Treatment**
* **Annealing:** Heat to 740-760°C (1360-1400°F), slow cool. Resulting hardness: ~190 HB.
* **Stress Relieving:** 600-650°C (1110-1200°F) after rough machining.
* **Preheating:** 650°C (1200°F)
* **Austenitizing:** **790-820°C (1450-1510°F)**. Hold thoroughly. Precise temperature controls final properties.
* **Quenching:** In circulating **oil** (50-80°C / 120-180°F).
* **Tempering:** Immediately after quenching. Typically **150-300°C (300-570°F)**. Hardness after tempering ranges from **58-64 HRC**, depending on tempering temperature.
* **Nitriding / Surface Treatment:** Can be nitrided or coated (e.g., TiN, CrN) to further enhance surface hardness and wear resistance.
#### **5. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hardened & Tempered)**
* **Density:** 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** 210 GPa (30.5 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Thermal Expansion Coefficient:** 11.5 x 10⁻⁶/K (20-100°C)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** ~38 W/m·K (at 20°C)
* **Hardness (After Tempering at ~200°C):** **61-63 HRC**
* **Compressive Strength:** ~ 2500 MPa (at 60 HRC)
* **Toughness:** Good for its hardness level.
#### **6. Primary Applications**
Assab DF-3 is widely used for a variety of cold work tooling where dimensional stability is key:
* **Blankting, Forming & Bending Dies:** For sheet metal work.
* **Press Tools and Punches:** For general purpose stamping.
* **Thread Rolling Dies and Knurls**
* **Precision Gauges, Master Tools, and Measuring Instruments** (due to exceptional dimensional stability).
* **Cutting Tools:** Such as taps, reamers, and broaches for non-ferrous materials.
* **Plastic Molds:** For lower-abrasion, high-precision molds.
* **Woodworking Tools:** Knives and blades.
#### **7. Availability & Processing Notes**
* **Forms Available:** Black bar, precision ground flat stock, forgings.
* **Machining:** Recommended in the annealed condition (~190 HB). Use sharp tools and positive rakes.
* **EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining):** Can be used. A stress-relief temper is recommended after roughing EDM before finishing.
* **Welding:** Not generally recommended for tool repair. If necessary, preheat to 300-400°C and use matching electrodes, followed by full re-hardening.
