# Product Datasheet: Assab Steels ASSAB XW-5 High-Carbon High-Chromium Cold Work Tool Steel
## Product Overview
**Assab Steels ASSAB XW-5** is a high-carbon, high-chromium ledeburitic cold work tool steel characterized by exceptionally high wear resistance and good compressive strength. As part of the conventional high-chromium tool steel family, it offers reliable performance for applications requiring maximum abrasion resistance with moderate toughness requirements.
## Key Characteristics & Advantages
- **Exceptional Wear Resistance:** High carbide content (primarily chromium carbides) provides outstanding resistance to abrasive wear
- **Good Compressive Strength:** Capable of withstanding high loading pressures without deformation
- **Fair Dimensional Stability:** Exhibits predictable and manageable dimensional changes during heat treatment
- **Good Through-Hardenability:** Can be air hardened in substantial sections with uniform properties
- **Economic Alternative:** Provides a cost-effective solution compared to more highly alloyed powder metallurgy steels for many applications

## Typical Heat Treatment
### Annealing
- **Process:** Heat to 850-870°C (1560-1600°F), slow cool at 10-20°C/hour to 600°C, then air cool
- **Resulting Hardness:** 200-230 HB
### Stress Relieving
- **Temperature:** 600-650°C (1110-1200°F) after rough machining
### Hardening
1. **Preheating:** 650°C (1200°F) and 800°C (1470°F) - two-stage recommended
2. **Austenitizing:** **950-980°C (1740-1800°F)** - soak thoroughly (30-45 minutes depending on section size)
3. **Quenching:** Cool in still **air** or forced air (for simpler shapes) or in **oil** (for complex shapes to minimize cracking risk)
### Tempering
- **Immediate tempering** after quenching is critical
- **Double tempering** recommended: 180-250°C (355-480°F) for cold work applications
- **Alternative tempering:** 400-550°C (750-1020°F) for applications requiring higher toughness (with corresponding hardness reduction)
- **Typical Hardness Range:** 58-62 HRC (when tempered at 200°C)
## Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hardened & Tempered)
| Property | Value | Unit |
|----------|-------|------|
| **Density** | 7.70 | g/cm³ |
| **Modulus of Elasticity** | 210 | GPa |
| **Thermal Expansion Coefficient (20-100°C)** | 10.4 | ×10⁻⁶/K |
| **Thermal Conductivity (20°C)** | 20.0 | W/(m·K) |
| **Specific Heat Capacity (20°C)** | 460 | J/(kg·K) |
| **Hardness (Tempered at 200°C)** | 60-62 | HRC |
| **Compressive Strength (60 HRC)** | ~2,500 | MPa |
| **Toughness** | Moderate | - |
## Primary Applications
ASSAB XW-5 is suitable for applications where wear resistance is the primary concern:
### Cutting and Shearing Applications
- **Blanking and Piercing Dies** for medium to long production runs
- **Shear Blades and Slitter Knives** for metal and non-metallic materials
- **Cut-off Tools and Inserts**
### Forming Applications
- **Cold Forming Rolls** and **Thread Rolling Dies**
- **Drawing Dies** for wires and bars (particularly for abrasive materials)
- **Bending and Forming Tools**
### Other Specialized Applications
- **Brick and Tile Molds** for abrasive ceramic materials
- **Plastic Molds** for processing filled/reinforced plastics
- **Wear Plates and Guides** in machinery
- **Gauges and Measuring Tools** requiring extreme wear resistance
- **Woodworking Tools** for processed wood products
## Processing Guidelines
### Machining
- **Recommended Condition:** Soft-annealed state (~220 HB)
- **Tool Requirements:** Use sharp tools with positive rakes
- **Machinability Rating:** Fair (40-50% compared to 1% C-steel)
### Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM)
- Suitable for EDM processing
- **Post-EDM Recommendation:** Stress relief at 150-200°C after roughing operations
- **Surface Condition:** White layer formation may require removal by polishing or additional tempering
### Grinding
- Use proper grinding techniques to avoid thermal cracking
- Employ adequate coolant flow
- Consider multi-pass grinding with light cuts
### Welding
- **Not generally recommended** for tool repair due to high cracking susceptibility
- **If necessary:** Preheating to 300-400°C required
- Use matching electrodes and follow with full re-hardening cycle
- Consider alternative repair methods (inserts, mechanical fastening)
### Surface Treatment
- Excellent candidate for **nitriding** (gas, plasma, or salt bath)
- Suitable for **PVD coatings** (TiN, TiCN, CrN) after proper surface preparation
- **Polishing:** Can achieve good surface finish with proper techniques
## Comparative Performance Notes
- **Wear Resistance:** Superior to A2, O1, and S7 grades
- **Toughness:** Lower than A2 and S7 but comparable to other high-chromium grades
- **Dimensional Stability:** Good, but requires careful heat treatment control
- **Deep-Hardening:** Excellent, with minimal size change in air hardening
## Available Forms & Sizes
- **Precision Ground Flat Stock:** Various thicknesses and widths
- **Forged Blocks:** Custom dimensions available
- **Bars:** Round, square, and hexagonal sections
- **Pre-finished Modules:** For mold and die applications
## Special Considerations
1. **Decarburization Sensitivity:** Requires adequate stock allowance for machining after heat treatment
2. **Carbide Segregation:** Larger sections may exhibit some carbide banding
3. **Cracking Tendency:** Higher risk during heat treatment compared to lower alloy steels - requires careful process control
4. **Annealing Criticality:** Proper annealing is essential for subsequent machining and heat treatment success
