# **Product Introduction: Crucible Rex M2 High Speed Steel**
Crucible Rex M2 is a premium, conventional ingot-cast version of the industry-standard AISI M2 high-speed steel (HSS). Produced using Crucible Industries' specialized melting and processing techniques, it delivers reliable and consistent performance that has made M2 the most widely used high-speed steel in the world for decades. While distinct from the particle metallurgy (PM) "CPM" grades, Rex M2 benefits from Crucible's metallurgical expertise to provide excellent quality with a favorable balance of properties.
Rex M2 is engineered to deliver the classic M2 performance profile: **excellent hot hardness (red hardness), good wear resistance, and a practical level of toughness**. It is the workhorse material for a vast range of cutting tools that operate at high speeds and generate significant heat, maintaining a sharp cutting edge where carbon tool steels would rapidly soften. Its balanced composition and proven reliability make it the default choice for general-purpose high-speed machining of steels, cast irons, and non-ferrous alloys.

## **1. Chemical Composition (Weight %)**
Rex M2 adheres to the standard AISI M2 composition, optimized for performance and processability.
| **Element** | **Carbon (C)** | **Tungsten (W)** | **Molybdenum (Mo)** | **Chromium (Cr)** | **Vanadium (V)** |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Content** | 0.85 - 0.95 | 5.90 - 6.40 | 4.70 - 5.20 | 3.80 - 4.40 | 1.75 - 2.05 |
| **Role** | Provides base hardness and combines with carbide-forming elements to create wear-resistant carbides. | Primary contributor to hot hardness and abrasion resistance through solid solution strengthening and stable carbide formation. | Major contributor to hardenability and hot hardness; a more potent hardener than tungsten on a weight basis. | Ensures deep and uniform hardenability and provides moderate oxidation resistance. | Forms hard, wear-resistant vanadium carbides (VC). Key for abrasion resistance at the cutting edge. |
*Note: Iron (Fe) constitutes the remainder. Cobalt (Co) is not a standard component of Rex M2 (see M35/M42 for cobalt-bearing grades).*

## **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties**
*Typical properties after proper heat treatment to 63-65 HRC.*
* **Density:** 8.16 g/cm³ (0.295 lb/in³)
* **Modulus of Elasticity:** ~215 GPa (31.2 x 10⁶ psi)
* **Thermal Conductivity:** Moderate, characteristic of tungsten-molybdenum high-speed steels.
* **Hot Hardness (Red Hardness):** **Excellent.** Can maintain a hardness above 60 HRC at temperatures exceeding 500°C (930°F), enabling efficient high-speed machining.
* **Hardness (Typical Working Range):** **62 - 66 HRC.** The most common working hardness is **64-65 HRC**, providing an optimal balance of wear resistance and toughness.
* **Abrasion Resistance:** **Good to Very Good.** Superior to carbon and low-alloy tool steels, especially at elevated temperatures where its hardness is retained.
* **Toughness:** **Good for a high-speed steel.** Offers better impact resistance than more highly alloyed HSS grades (like M4 or T15), making it suitable for tools subject to intermittent cuts or mild shock.
* **Grindability:** **Fair.** Grindability is adequate with proper aluminum oxide wheels, though care must be taken to avoid grinding burns due to its high alloy content and hard carbides.
---
## **3. Heat Treatment**
Proper heat treatment is essential to achieve the desired combination of hardness, toughness, and red hardness.
* **Annealing:** Heat to 850-870°C (1560-1600°F), slow cool in furnace. Annealed hardness: 215-240 HB.
* **Stress Relieving:** 600-650°C (1110-1200°F), hold, then slow cool.
* **Preheating:** **Critical.** Use a double preheat: First at 540-650°C (1000-1200°F), then at 815-870°C (1500-1600°F) to minimize thermal shock and distortion.
* **Austenitizing:** **1190-1220°C (2175-2230°F).** A typical temperature is **1205°C (2200°F)**. Precise control is necessary; higher temperatures increase hot hardness but reduce toughness.
* **Quenching:** Air quench (for most tools), salt bath quench, or controlled gas/pressure quench. Oil quenching can be used but increases the risk of distortion.
* **Tempering:** **Mandatory Multiple Tempers.** Temper immediately after quenching. **Two to three tempers**, each for 2 hours, are standard. **Typical tempering range: 540-570°C (1000-1060°F).** A distinct secondary hardening peak occurs, increasing hardness after the first temper.
* **Sub-Zero Treatment:** Commonly applied between quenching and tempering to convert retained austenite, ensuring maximum hardness and dimensional stability.
---
## **4. Key Applications**
Rex M2 is the quintessential general-purpose high-speed steel used across countless industrial applications.
* **General-Purpose Cutting Tools:** Drills, taps, reamers, end mills, milling cutters, and gear hobs for machining carbon steels, alloy steels, and cast irons.
* **Saw Blades & Cutting Inserts:** Teeth for high-speed metal cutting band saws and circular saws.
* **Woodworking Tools:** High-quality router bits, shaper cutters, and planer knives where heat build-up from high feed rates is a concern.
* **Punches, Dies & Forming Tools:** For cold work applications such as stamping, fine blanking, and thread rolling.
* **Machine Components:** Wear parts such as guides, bearings, and rollers that require a combination of hardness and toughness.
---
## **5. International Standards & Cross-References**
Crucible Rex M2 conforms to the widely recognized AISI M2 specification.
* **AISI/SAE:** **M2**
* **UNS:** T11302
* **European (EN):** HS 6-5-2 / **1.3343**
* **Japanese (JIS):** **SKH51**
* **ISO:** HS6-5-2
* **Common Trade Names:** M2 HSS, High Speed Steel M2. (Note: "Rex M2" is Crucible's brand name for its conventional M2 product, distinct from "CPM M2" which is their PM version).
---
## **6. Advantages & Limitations**
**Advantages:**
* **Proven Performance & Reliability:** Decades of established use with predictable results.
* **Excellent Cost-to-Performance Ratio:** Offers a superb balance of hot hardness, wear resistance, and toughness at a reasonable cost.
* **Good Toughness:** Better able to withstand shock and interrupted cuts than higher-alloy HSS grades.
* **Wide Availability & Familiarity:** Easily sourced and well-understood by heat treaters and toolmakers globally.
**Limitations (vs. PM grades like CPM M2):**
* **Lower Transverse Toughness:** Can exhibit directionality (anisotropy) due to carbide segregation, making it more prone to chipping in certain orientations.
* **Inferior Grindability:** More difficult to grind than PM M2, with higher risk of burning and shorter wheel life.
* **Less Consistent Microstructure:** Slight variations in carbide size and distribution can lead to more variable performance compared to homogeneous PM steels.
* **Lower Potential Hardness/Wear:** Cannot achieve the same level of hardness or wear resistance as optimized PM super high-speed steels.
---
## **7. Summary**
**Crucible Rex M2 is the industry benchmark for general-purpose high-speed steel.** It embodies the classic combination of properties that has made AISI M2 indispensable in metalworking and tooling applications worldwide. While advanced PM grades offer enhancements in specific areas, Rex M2 remains the most cost-effective and versatile solution for the vast majority of high-speed cutting and wear applications. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its well-balanced performance, reliability, and established value in industrial manufacturing.
