Sandvik SAF 2304 Plate, Sheet and Coil Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: # **Product Name: Sandvik SAF 2304 Plate, Sheet and Coil (UNS S32304 / EN 1.4362)** ## **Introduction** Sandvik SAF 2304 in Plate, Sheet, and Coil forms is a **molybdenum-free duplex stainless steel** designed as a high-performance, cost-effective upgrade to standard austenitic grades like 316L. By combining a balanced ferrite-austenite microstructure, it delivers **approximately double the yield strength** of 316L along with **significantly superior resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC)**. These product forms provide an optimal solution for structural and general corrosion applications where the enhanced pitting resistance of molybdenum-bearing duplex grades is not essential, but higher strength and SCC resistance are critical for safety, weight reduction, and design efficiency. ## **Key Features** * **High Strength & Weight Reduction:** Yield strength (≥ 400 MPa) allows for the use of thinner sections in tanks, structures, and components compared to 316L, enabling significant material savings and lighter constructions. * **Excellent Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) Resistance:** Offers far greater resistance to chloride-induced SCC than 300-series austenitic stainless steels, a key advantage in environments containing chlorides or coastal atmospheres. * **Cost-Effective Performance:** The absence of molybdenum provides a more economical and price-stable alternative to standard duplex grades like 2205, while still delivering the core duplex benefits. * **Good Fabricability:** Can be reliably welded, formed, and machined using practices adapted for duplex stainless steels, offering good toughness and weldability. --- ## **1. Chemical Composition (Typical Weight % - Sandvik Specification)** The composition is optimized for a stable duplex structure without molybdenum. | Element | Content (%) | Element | Content (%) | | :------------- | :------------ | :------------- | :---------- | | Chromium (Cr) | 21.5 - 24.5 | Nickel (Ni) | 3.0 - 5.5 | | Molybdenum (Mo)| ≤ 0.6 | **Nitrogen (N)**| **0.05 - 0.20** | | Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.5 | Copper (Cu) | 0.05 - 0.60 | | Silicon (Si) | ≤ 1.0 | Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.030 | | Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.040 | Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.015 | | **Iron (Fe)** | **Balance** | | | **Key Alloying Characteristic:** **No deliberate molybdenum addition.** Corrosion resistance is achieved through high chromium and controlled nitrogen. **PREN Calculation:** PREN = %Cr + 3.3(%Mo) + 16(%N) ≈ **24 - 27** --- ## **2. Physical & Mechanical Properties (Typical - Annealed Condition)** | Property | Value / Range | | :-------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------- | | Density | 7.8 g/cm³ | | Thermal Conductivity (20°C) | ~19 W/m·K | | Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (20-100°C) | ~13.0 x 10⁻⁶ /K | | Modulus of Elasticity | 200 GPa | | **Tensile Strength (Rm)** | **600 - 820 MPa** | | **Yield Strength (Rp0.2)** | **≥ 400 MPa** | | **Elongation (A in 50mm)** | **≥ 25 %** | | Hardness (Brinell) | 220 - 280 HBW | | **Impact Toughness (Charpy V-notch)** | **> 100 J at -40°C** | **Product Form Definitions:** * **Plate:** Thickness typically ≥ 3mm (0.118"), supplied as single flat pieces. * **Sheet:** Thickness typically < 3mm, supplied as flat pieces or from coil. * **Coil (Strip):** Continuous length of sheet, wound, ideal for high-volume processing. --- ## **3. Product Forms & Applications** **Available Product Forms & Conditions:** * **Plate:** Hot rolled, annealed, and pickled plate; cut-to-size. * **Sheet:** Cold rolled, 2B, 2D, No. 1 finish. * **Coil:** Hot rolled coil, cold rolled coil (Annealed & Pickled, A&P). * **Finishes:** Standard mill finishes, polished options available. **Primary Applications (Upgrading from 304L/316L where SCC is a risk):** SAF 2304 is ideal where 316L is at its limits due to strength or SCC, without the need for molybdenum's pitting resistance. * **Construction & Architecture:** Structural components, bridges, roofing, façades, and walkways in coastal environments or areas using de-icing salts. * **Water & Wastewater Treatment:** Storage tanks, pressure vessels, pipework, and basin covers. * **Chemical & Process Industry:** Tanks, vessels, and piping for mildly corrosive chemicals, organic acids, and sulfate-containing media. * **Pulp & Paper Industry:** Storage tanks, washer drums, and equipment exposed to neutral sulfite liquors. * **Food & Beverage:** Fermentation tanks, brewing vessels, and structural supports. * **Transportation:** Structural parts for railcars, ship interiors, and trailer bodies. * **Heat Exchangers:** For cooling water systems with moderate chloride levels where 316L may suffer from SCC. --- ## **4. International Standards & Approvals** Sandvik SAF 2304 Plate, Sheet, and Coil comply with recognized international standards for this duplex grade. | Standard Type | Standard Number & Designation | Notes | | :------------------ | :--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------- | | **Unified Numbering System (UNS)** | **S32304** | The standard UNS designation for this molybdenum-free duplex alloy. | | **EN / EURONORM (Europe)** | **1.4362** | The common European material number. | | | EN 10088-2: Flat products for general purposes | Key European product standard. | | **ASTM (USA)** | **ASTM A240/A240M** (Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and General Application) | The primary procurement standard for plate and sheet in the Americas. | | | **ASTM A480/A480M** (General Requirements for Flat-Rolled Stainless Steel) | Governs dimensional tolerances and delivery conditions. | | **Other Standards** | JIS G4304 / G4305 (Japan) - SUS323J1
GB/T 20878 (China) | Included in major national standards. | --- ## **Critical Technical & Procurement Note** **SAF 2304 is a specific duplex grade chosen for its unique strength-SCC-cost balance.** 1. **Procurement Specification:** Specify **"Sandvik SAF 2304 to ASTM A240 S32304"** or **"EN 1.4362"** to ensure receipt of the correct molybdenum-free duplex grade. 2. **Material Condition:** Supplied in the **solution annealed and pickled condition**. This is essential for achieving the correct duplex microstructure and corrosion resistance. 3. **Fabrication Guidance:** * **Forming:** Requires about 20-30% higher forces than 316L. Adhere to recommended minimum bend radii. * **Welding:** Use qualified procedures. Filler metals such as 2209 are commonly used. Control heat input to avoid excessive ferrite in the weld HAZ. 4. **Corrosion Selection:** Its primary advantage is **SCC resistance, not high pitting resistance**. It is **not suitable** for seawater immersion or high-chloride environments where pitting is the dominant failure mode. For such conditions, **SAF 2205 (S32205)** must be used. 5. **Certification:** Require a **Sandvik Mill Test Certificate (MTC/CMTR)** confirming compliance with the ordered standard, including chemical analysis (showing low Mo) and mechanical properties. This is crucial to distinguish it from other duplex grades. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Sandvik SAF 2304 Plate, Sheet and Coil Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <7298 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: Sandvik SAF 2304 Plate, Sheet and Coil Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
