AISI 1541 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15410) Product Information -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: ### **Product Introduction: AISI 1541 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15410)** **Overview** AISI 1541 (UNS G15410) is a high-manganese, medium-carbon alloy steel supplied in the economical **hot rolled bar** condition. Belonging to the "15xx" series of **manganese alloy steels**, it is characterized by an elevated manganese content (1.35-1.65%) combined with a balanced medium carbon level. This composition provides superior hardenability, strength, and toughness compared to standard carbon steels like 1041 or 1045. The hot-rolled as-supplied condition makes it a cost-effective raw material for components destined for forging, machining, and subsequent heat treatment. AISI 1541 is a versatile workhorse grade for applications demanding a reliable combination of high load-bearing capacity, good impact resistance, and wear resistance. **Key Features & Advantages** * **High Strength & Excellent Hardenability:** The synergistic effect of medium carbon and high manganese provides deep hardenability, enabling effective through-hardening of substantial cross-sections to achieve high tensile and yield strength after heat treatment. * **Good Toughness & Impact Resistance:** Manganese promotes a fine-grained structure which, when combined with proper heat treatment (especially tempering), results in good resistance to shock and impact loading. * **Good Wear Resistance:** In the hardened and tempered condition, it offers good resistance to abrasion and surface wear, suitable for components in sliding or rolling contact under stress. * **Excellent Forgeability:** Highly suitable for hot forging into complex shapes. The manganese improves high-temperature ductility and contributes to sound internal quality and good mechanical properties in forged parts. * **Cost-Effective Performance Steel:** Offers a significant performance advantage over plain carbon steels and serves as a more economical alternative to chromium-molybdenum steels (e.g., 4140) for many applications where extreme depth of hardening is not the primary requirement. --- ### **1. Chemical Composition (Standard Conformance)** | Element | Standard Range (%) | Key Function | | :--- | :--- | :--- | | **Carbon (C)** | 0.36 – 0.44 | Provides core strength and hardenability. This medium-carbon level is optimized for achieving high strength after heat treatment while maintaining forgeability and reasonable machinability. | | **Manganese (Mn)** | 1.35 – 1.65 | **Primary Alloying Element.** Significantly enhances hardenability, allowing for deeper and more uniform hardening. Also contributes substantially to strength and promotes a fine grain structure. | | **Phosphorus (P)** | ≤ 0.040 (max) | Residual element, kept low to ensure good toughness. | | **Sulfur (S)** | ≤ 0.050 (max) | Residual element, kept low. **This is not a free-machining steel.** | | **Silicon (Si)** | 0.15 – 0.35 | Acts as a deoxidizer; contributes to strength. | | **Iron (Fe)** | Balance | Base element. | **Key International Standard Equivalents:** * **UNS:** G15410 * **AISI/SAE:** 1541 * **ASTM:** A29 (Standard Specification for Steel Bars, Carbon and Alloy, Hot-Wrought) * **ASTM:** A519 (for mechanical tubing) * **DIN (Germany):** ~1.1167 / 38Mn6 (Very close analogue; carbon range is similar) * **EN (Europe):** 1.1167 / 38Mn6 * **JIS (Japan):** SMn443 (Similar, JIS G4052) --- ### **2. Typical Physical & Mechanical Properties (Hot Rolled, As-Rolled Condition)** *Note: These are typical properties in the as-supplied state. Final service properties are developed through heat treatment (e.g., quenching & tempering).* | Property | Typical Value / Description | | :--- | :--- | | **Density** | 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³) | | **Tensile Strength** | 620 – 780 MPa (90 – 113 ksi) | | **Yield Strength (0.2% Offset)** | 380 – 550 MPa (55 – 80 ksi) | | **Elongation (in 50mm)** | 16% – 22% | | **Reduction of Area** | 40% – 55% | | **Brinell Hardness (HB)** | 190 – 240 | | **Machinability (Comparison)** | Fair (~40% of AISI 1212). Machining in the as-rolled state is demanding; normalizing is recommended prior to extensive machining. | | **Surface Condition** | Standard hot-rolled finish with mill scale. | --- ### **3. Product Applications** AISI 1541 hot rolled bars are commonly used as starting stock for robust, high-strength components across heavy industries. * **Forged Components:** Crankshafts, connecting rods, lever arms, yoke arms, and other high-stress forged parts requiring toughness and strength. * **Shafts and Axles:** Drive shafts, axle shafts, transmission shafts, and heavy-duty roller shafts that will be through-hardened. * **Gear and Sprocket Blanks:** Stock for medium to heavy-duty gears, pinions, and sprockets destined for through-hardening or case hardening. * **High-Strength Fasteners:** Large bolts, studs, and pins requiring very high tensile strength (e.g., beyond Grade 8). * **Agricultural and Construction Equipment:** High-wear components like pivot pins, bushings, spindles, bucket teeth, and cutting edges. * **General Heavy-Duty Machinery Parts:** High-strength brackets, hydraulic cylinder components, press frames, and drill collar stocks. --- ### **4. Important Considerations** * **Not a Free-Machining Steel:** Contains low sulfur. Machining in the as-rolled state is challenging due to its hardness and consistency. **Normalizing prior to extensive machining is strongly recommended** to improve machinability, dimensional stability, and tool life. * **Heat Treatment is Essential for Service Properties:** This steel achieves its full potential (high strength, wear resistance) through heat treatment. Common processes include normalizing (pre-machining), quenching & tempering (for high strength: can achieve HRC 40-50+ with proper tempering), and surface hardening. * **Mill Scale:** The surface oxide layer must be removed via pickling, shot blasting, or machining prior to most finishing operations, coating, or welding. * **Weldability:** Weldable with stringent procedures. **Preheating (200-300°C / 400-570°F) is mandatory** to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking in the hardenable heat-affected zone (HAZ). Use of low-hydrogen electrodes and a controlled post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) cycle is essential for restoring toughness and relieving stresses. * **Comparison to 1041/1045:** AISI 1541 offers vastly superior hardenability and strength, allowing effective heat treatment of much larger sections with less severe quenches. * **Comparison to 1340/4140:** Similar in carbon to 1340 but with higher manganese, giving it slightly better hardenability. Compared to 4140, 1541 has lower alloy cost and good hardenability but lacks the enhanced toughness, deeper hardening, and tempering resistance of chromium-molybdenum steel. * **"H" Grade Availability:** An **AISI 1541H** grade exists for applications requiring guaranteed hardenability bands (per SAE J1268), ensuring predictable and consistent heat treatment results for critical, high-volume, or safety-critical components. --- **Disclaimer:** The information provided is based on typical industry specifications for reference purposes. Actual properties may vary based on manufacturer, production lot, section size, and final processing. For engineering applications, always consult certified material test reports and relevant application standards. The as-rolled condition is a starting material; final part performance is critically dependent on subsequent manufacturing and properly controlled heat treatment processes. -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1541 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15410) Specification Dimensions Size: Diameter 20-1000 mm Length <5040 mm Size:We can customized as required Standard: Per your request or drawing We can customized as required Properties(Theoretical) Chemical Composition -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -: AISI 1541 Steel, Hot Rolled Bar (UNS G15410) Properties -:- For detailed product information, please contact sales. -:
